Will Ellsworth, our member who always shows up wearing a three piece suit, is an expert on financial planning. He'll give us some tips on planning for our future.
Last week a bunch of us gathered at Brian McCoy's shop to build two 4x8 garden boxes for the Good Samaritan Home. Come spring, we'll deliver them and fill them with top soil. They can look forward to lots of fresh vegetables! Thanks to Jeff, Brian, James, Michela, Scott and John S.
We've been busy delivering dictionaries to our third graders this week. Roger reports that there are still a few schools we need to get to. Let Roger know if you can help.
Cornelia reports that she's been volunteering at the Tuesday noon program. She's working with a group of women, from all over the world, on knitting projects. She's learned that knitting is a universal language!
Here's our article from last August:
The Women's program at the Agency for New Americans serves women from a wide range of demographics: Columbian, Somali, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudanese, Bhutanese, Burmese, Karen, Iraqi, Syrian, Afghani. The spirit of the program lies in providing women with a sense of inclusiveness, community, belonging and support during a time of great transition and acculturation. All classes are held with trauma informed practices in mind and come from a strengths based focus.
Boise Metro obtained the $500 District 5400 grant that supports this special program for women refugees at Agency for New Americans. The facilitator of the program expressed a lot of gratitude for the financial support; it is really needed. They also need some volunteer support. The program meets on Tuesdays weekly from 12:30 to 3:00 pm (yes, it conflicts with our meeting time) from now until the last day on December 5th. I am hoping we can start having volunteers there on September 12th. Anyone volunteering must go through a one hour orientation on Tuesday, August 29th at 6pm at St. Steven's Episcopal Church at 2206 Cole Road, Boise. It would be great to have 1 to 3 volunteers from Rotary each week (they do have volunteers from other places as well). Volunteers can help with transportation, childcare, setting up/taking down the room. Female volunteers can sit in on the class and both support it and learn about women refugees.
Depending on the wishes of our club and how this initial experience with this agency goes, I am hoping we might work towards obtaining a larger grant next year and work on a larger project with this refugee agency.
Dan and Charles are enthusiastically supporting a new project for our club. We're going to provide Christmas Trees and decorations for the 11 kids in a house run by JemFriends for kids who have aged out of foster care and have nowhere to go. Our board has approved an expenditure of $600. We'll be needing some ornaments - if you have any to donate, please bring them to the next meeting.
JEMfriends is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located in located in Boise, Idaho. Since 2009, we have been working to see that each person aging out of foster care has opportunities to flourish in a society that understands their adversity and supports them in becoming loving adults.
Clear your calendar for Tuesday, December 19th. We'll be volunteering at Winter Gardens Aglow at the Botanical Garden. We'll be tour guides, fire monitors, hot chocolate servers, and whatever else they want us to do. Times 5-9PM. We need 15 volunteers. Contact Cahill Jones to sign up.
