Our program this week will be Dr. Cheryl Jorcyk of the BSU Department of Biological Sciences. She is a oft-published expert in Biomolecular Cancer Cell Research.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and 103.5 KISS-FM is organizing Live for 175, a live radio event, April 22 to 29 at The Village in Meridian. They are looking for community volunteers to pedal-power the radio station for 175 hours, around the clock. Rotarians, are you with me?!? We have signed up to ride on April 23rd from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM. Let me know if you can join us!
Water, water everywhere! Flooding has forced us to postpone our "Lemonade Stand" for a while. There wouldn't be much point in it if the Greenbelt is officially "closed". This was an important part of our effort to get the word out so its more important than ever for all of us to share the brochures and promote brick sales to all our friends, business acquaintances and family. We are finalizing a price list for "naming opportunities" (benches, etc). We'll be testing it out this week. This week we'll be meeting with the Treasure Valley Cycling Association; next week presentations to Meridian and Western Treasure Valley Rotary Clubs. We are also planning a display table at District Conference (we need an easel). I expect a story in the Statesman any day, soon to be followed by KTVB. If you have opportunities for marketing or presentations to other groups, let us know! Have presentation, will travel!
As you will recall, our club participated in a Global Grant, led by Boise Sunrise, to purchase a Toyota Land Cruiser and medical equipment for the clinic at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. Steve Merrill is happy to report this week that the truck has been delivered! The clinic will now be able to provide much needed medical services to the rural areas around the park. Read the complete update here.
Its that time of year! District 5400's annual raffle tickets sales supports a variety of youth programs like Youth Exchange and RYLA. A portion will come back to the clubs to help defray the cost of attendance. We are each asked to sell 10 tickets. Please make checks payable to Boise Metro Rotary so we can send one check to District Conference. The winner receives a $4500 AAA Travel credit. Whomever sells the winning ticket also gets $4500! So, if you buy all ten yourself, your chances improve dramatically! Tickets are due MAY 10TH!! ( I have been assured that we have been given the "good" tickets). There are also a number of lesser prizes!
The sale of commemorative bricks represents about half of the total cost of our $60,000 Greenbelt project. Our goal is to sell 500 bricks by the end of May. The on-line order form is up and running at http://www.bricks.boisemetrorotary.org. Everything you could want to now about the project is on the club homepage under the "Greenbelt project" tab. You can also pick up a supply of brochures to put at critical locations and hand out to your friends, family and neighbors. And we have T-shirts available for ten bucks. Alli will have her laptop at the meeting on Tuesday - she'll show you how easy it is to order bricks!!
We are also looking for groups that might like to hear our presentation. John and Dave are presenting at Meridian 4/24 and Western Treasure Valley 4/26.....maybe our own club 5/2. Anyone interested in a road trip? We'll set up a display at District Conference and we're checking into having a table at the Capital District Farmers Market (in lieu of our washed out Lemonade Stand). Stay tuned...........
Steve Merrill from Boise Sunrise paid us a visit recently. First, he wanted to report that the Land Cruiser that was purchased for Gorongoza through a Rotary Global Grant that we participated in has been delivered! Second, he's invited us to participate in the second annual Rotary Night at the Zoo, which was so much fun last year as a Gorongoza fund raiser. This time it'll be a fund raiser for Boise Rotary clubs. We can get a share of the tickets we sell. The event will be Thursday May 4th. Tickets will be $20 for adults, $10 for kids. He has asked that one of us to volunteer to be the Coordinator for our club.
Our Fellowship 101 winner this month was Janice Fulkerson........Bill Cafferty won his age group in a recent 5K run (he was the only one in his age group).....Nate enjoyed his Spring Break in Europe......Roger enjoyed some Final 4 B-Ball in person......we have a NC fan in our midst......Bret reported he'll be getting a tax refund for the first time in his life......last week's speaker completely cured Will's tennis elbow and Scott's shoulder twitch (which he got by blowing his nose)......
