This week Alli Dunn, our club's Membership Chair, will talk about our membership goal for the year and the "tricks of the trade" for identifying and encouraging prospective members of our club.
Justin Jantz - Justin, who is very tall, was born in Boise and grew up around here, graduating from Kuna High School. He went to college at Northern Colorado and Boise State, earning a Masters in Accounting and Sports Administration. After spending some tine in Arizona and Billings coaching football, he returned to Boise to take a job with Wells Fargo as a Relationship Manager in their Business Banking Group. Justin and his wife of 14 years, Harmony, have one child age 4. His hobbies are outdoor adventures, baseball and reading. Right now he's "knee deep" in a house remodel. Oh yes, he has two dogs, a yellow lab named Millie and a Collie/Healer mix ranch dog named Sophie.
James Hepworth - Born in Logan, Utah, James is the eldest of 11 kids (9 boys) growing up in the Seattle area. He describes himself as the "CEO of the family". He graduated from BSU with a degree in Computer Information Systems. James is true entrepreneur, having created and sold several tech companies. His current project is called "First to File". James' hobbies are wake surfing, snowboarding and anything outdoorsy. He shares two daughters age 9 and 13. He was recently married to Michela Swarthout who is a member of Centennial Rotary. Oh yes, unfortunately he has NO dogs!
In a few weeks our 2017-18 Youth Exchange Student will arrive. Cecylia Rose Meredith is coming from Warsaw, Poland and will enroll as a Senior at Boise High. Our club's Youth Exchange Officer is Rick Hoescher and Cecylia's club counselor will be Deb Every. Her first host family is Hal and Laura Spencer. By the way, our outbound Youth Exchange student is Ian Wallace.
Our Riverpointe Park rehab project behind the Garden City library is almost complete. The new signs will arrive any day, we have to install them. The total cost of the project is about $10k, with partnerships from the Pollinators and the City of Garden City. There's a District Grant of $3,750. There's interesting history here - our club built that park many years ago. Look for a "grand opening" soon!
Last week we were called to a meeting with Doug Holloway, Boise's Parks Department head, to be informed that we would not be able to use the "Lugenbeel Monument" for our Greenbelt project. On behalf of the city, he was extremely apologetic that this issue had not been raised at the beginning. Recall that a portion of the inscription on the monument is "the beginning of civilization in the Boise valley". We all knew that wasn't true, that Native American had inhabited this area long before Pinkney Lugenbeel showed up. Now we learn that some city administration officials are concerned that this language may be offensive to some. Therefore, it has been directed that the "Lugenbeel" Monument may not be placed on any public property within the city. Sadly, this means the monument is now lost to history as it will remain in storage.
We do have a Plan B, however. Too soon to reveal all the details, but it involves one of the other monuments that we had discovered. The city is researching the options. Stay tuned! In the meantime, we still need to sell more bricks!
