This week we are excited to introduce Ted Trueblood. Coming down from Alaska he was Rotary District Governor for D5010 (Alaska/Siberia) in 2011-12. He is a civil engineer by trade and is active in the University of Alaska Alumni Association. He is a big supporter of Rotary, in fact a member of the Arch Klumph Society. He and his wife live in "Stuckagain, Alaska" - no kidding! Ted will be talking to us about conservation. His Dad was an editor for Field ad Stream and founded the Boise chapter of Trout Unlimited.
We are pleased report that the Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation has approved our grant request for $5,000 toward the Greenbelt project! Our fundraising is now up to about $42,000. No news on our Plan B to use the "other" monument. The City Parks and Rec folks are researching possibilities. But we will need to keep selling bricks!!
The Women's program at the Agency for New Americans serves women from a wide range of demographics: Columbian, Somali, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudanese, Bhutanese, Burmese, Karen, Iraqi, Syrian, Afghani. The spirit of the program lies in providing women with a sense of inclusiveness, community, belonging and support during a time of great transition and acculturation. All classes are held with trauma informed practices in mind and come from a strengths based focus.
Boise Metro obtained the $500 District 5400 grant that supports this special program for women refugees at Agency for New Americans. The facilitator of the program expressed a lot of gratitude for the financial support; it is really needed. They also need some volunteer support. The program meets on Tuesdays weekly from 12:30 to 3:00 pm (yes, it conflicts with our meeting time) from now until the last day on December 5th. I am hoping we can start having volunteers there on September 12th. Anyone volunteering must go through a one hour orientation on Tuesday, August 29th at 6pm at St. Steven's Episcopal Church at 2206 Cole Road, Boise. It would be great to have 1 to 3 volunteers from Rotary each week (they do have volunteers from other places as well). Volunteers can help with transportation, childcare, setting up/taking down the room. Female volunteers can sit in on the class and both support it and learn about women refugees.
Depending on the wishes of our club and how this initial experience with this agency goes, I am hoping we might work towards obtaining a larger grant next year and work on a larger project with this refugee agency.
Our Rotary Youth Exchange student, Cecylia, arrives from Poland at about 9:00 PM on August 17th. Join our welcoming committee at the airport! Its up to all of us to insure that our students get a comprehensive taste of "life in America". You can help by inviting Cecylia to join you on your family outings or, just have her over for dinner! But before you do that, you have to complete a very brief background check. Do it now, so its out of the way. You'll find the form on our website under "Club Documents". Rick Holscher is our RYE chair. By the way, our Outbound student, going to France, is Ian Wallace.
Shiloh reported that her son went to RYLA and came back changed..... a good thing!......on his summer away, logging 11,000 miles, Dave G. went to 14 Rotary meetings - NONE of them were singing clubs!.....Scott presented Jeff with his President -elect pin........we thanked our speaker, Ed Fritz, who talked about crime prevention with a book about Sherlock Holmes......Janice and Scott are starting to think about our Rose Sale......Roger is recruiting a member to take charge of the Dictionary Project..........
