Our small, self-appointed group, met last week at Jeff Larsen's and brainstormed ideas on how to make Boise Metro Rotary Club's commitment to Garfield Everyday Leadership students and this program stronger and more meaningful for all those involved.

We are working on guidelines for our Rotary volunteers. What we'd like to do first is jump into the action by participating in Garfield Elementary's Everyday Leadership's current "Canned Food Drive".  We'd like every member to bring at least one can of food to this coming Tuesday's meeting. I will be responsible for collecting those contributions and then delivering them to Garfield Elementary.

We have so many ideas about how our club can become more involved in helping mentor these fantastic youth leaders. We will share these as they are developed.

I'd also like to share some emails flying back and forth among our little group after last Tuesday's attendance at their afternoon session.

These kids are awesome. Sonia is so dedicated to this program. The YMCA developed the curriculum and they are there at every session to help facilitate.

This week's session was about Non-Verbal Communication. OK.....these are 5th graders, and they are learning about things I studied during my Masters Program! I know ---I'm really old, but one young student noticed something in an artistic representation that should have jumped out at me. I had an, "Ah HAH!" moment.

Jeff is correct in suggesting that we need to be a continuing presence in their progress. Not just with monetary contributions, but with our participation in their classes and events. They are already engaged in some of the same things we support like Rake Up Boise. They could help us replant Deer Flat and Hulls Gulch! They love getting their hands dirty and being involved. Did you know that they brainstorm the projects for STEM camps for the Pre-K participants? Such terrific ideas!

Our goal is to have as many of our clubs members as are interested as excited as we are in this partnership. And to make a commitment to the EL program not just financially, but with our presence and involvement.
