Milkweed!!  Last spring, Boise Mayor McLean signed the National Wildlife Federation's Mayor Monarch Pledge, publicly acknowledging Boise's commitment to taking action to support monarch butterflies (Idaho's State Insect) through habitat enhancement and public education.  A key component of habitat enhancement is providing milkweed, the sole food source for monarch caterpillars.  Adult female monarchs lay eggs on milkweed plants which the larvae consume as they grow. And Monarch habitat is a big RI theme, including current RI President Jennifer Jones. Rotary Monarch Story

Milkweed grows naturally along the Boise River, but there is plenty of space to supplement current populations through additional planting.  Boise Parks and Recreation has an abundance of locally collected milkweed seed that can be planted between now and late February.
On Saturday, February 4th at 11am, Boise Metro Rotary is going to help Boise enhance monarch habitat in our adopted greenbelt section by planting milkweed seeds! Come Join Us!
