THIS WEEK - MORRISON CENTER
Our speaker this week will be James Patrick, Executive Director of the Velma V. Morrison Center For The Performing Arts. James Patrick was named Executive Director of the Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts on the Campus of Boise State University in January of 2011. As the chief executive officer of Idaho’s premier performing arts center, he reports directly to the University President.  Mr. Patrick oversees all day to day operations, including the artistic programming of the 2,037-seat main theatre, as well as various arts education programs. The Morrison Center is regularly ranked as one of the top university performing arts centers in the nation.
VILLAGE HOPE UPDATE
We have been supporting a project called Project Hope in Sierra Leone, spearheaded by Jon Bart of the Boise Rotary club. They have recently been awarded a Global Grant from Rotary International for $221,000. The project involves cultivating Cassava beans and processing it into a grain like product called gari. In an effort to provide opportunities for families in the village, they have also branched into other programs like computer training, tractor rentals and contract farming, rice threshing and milling and more. You can read more about it here and see the 2016 annual report from Dr. Bart here
.
GORONGOZA UPDATE
We received word on December 2nd that the Global Grant for the Gorongosa Mobile Medical Services Expansion GG#1530732 has been approved.   This initiative has raised the funds necessary to purchase a Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 vehicle to transport trained medical staff to remote communities of the areas surrounding Gorongosa National Park.  These medical staffs provide an array of services - Mobile Health Brigades vaccinate and examine and treat patients having no other medical service, Model Moms and Traditional Birth Attendants provide pre and neo-natal care, Community Health Workers reside in their communities and educate the population on preventative health practices and techniques.  The purchase of the vehicle will extend these existing services to communities not currently served.  Additionally, any funds left over from he purchase of the vehicle will be applied toward the training of additional medical staff.  If you would like to learn more about these programs I would recommend you take a look at the description of these programs at http://www.gorongosa.org/our-story/community/health.

SEMILLA NUEVA UPDATE
The Semilla Nueva Global Grant has been going really well. 20 families just successfully harvested rice, netting $94 on average worth of rice to eat and sell. The new high protein corn seed has been going even better. 2,916 families got seed in 2016, and over 500 have used a new Semilla Nueva methodology to save seed in plastic bottles to save them from buying seed the following year. Many other families are saving seed in more traditional ways. We're proud that over 27,000 people should be eating a more nutritious diet everyday thanks to the work that we did with the Global Grant. in 2017, we want to make that number grow even higher and we are already producing seed.

THANKS FOR THE DICTIONARIES
The 3rd Graders at Monroe Elementary School sent us some very cool thank you notes for the dictionaries. Cornelia has picked her favorite. You can see the whole collection by clicking here.

HELP WANTED - BULLETIN EDITOR
Are you a closet writer? Here's an exciting opportunity for the right Rotarian! Yours truly has been doing our club bulletin for nearly four years. Its time for someone else to take the mantle. I believe the weekly bulletin is crucial for effective club communication. It always starts with "This Week". We all can appreciate how much easier it is to invite a prospective member when you know who the speaker is going to be. (Thanks to Mary Reiman for always having a program ready!) While our club attendance is really good, compared to other clubs, the bulletin is also written for the members who were not there the previous week. That keeps everyone "in the loop". Of course, we always end with "Odds 'n Ends" for short bits and "in jokes". Our bulletin is a great recruiting tool, going to almost 100 "friends" besides our members. A new editor might have different ideas!

There is a learning curve, no doubt. The editor will have to learn the basics of ClubRunner. I will be available to share tips and tricks. And the pay is great!! Let me know if you're interested!
ODDS 'N ENDS
Kim Tower recently enjoyed a trip to Dominican Republic. Turns out there was a bunch of Rotarians on the ship! they got together over Margueritas to share their Rotary experiences.
