Our guest this week will be Mark Wibbels, an engineer at HP who is the mentor for the Boise FIRST team. This national program is to inspire youngsters' interest in engineering through competition in robot building. The "Tator Tots" team will be bringing their current robot to display its capabilities.

Many have family in town, kids are home from school and our guest speaker will have a working robot to demonstrate at the club on Tuesday.  Please plan to attend, bring family, and bring a guest.  It’s going to be fun!

This is awesome! Our club has been approved to host an Open World Team from Russia October 7-15, 2016. There will be lots more details to follow!  Thank Cornelia for recognizing this opportunity and following through!

"The Open World Program is available only to Rotary clubs in the United States, and provides an opportunity to build fellowship, friendship, and strengthen international understanding by hosting emerging Eurasian leaders from Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kirgizstan, Moldova, Russia, Uzbekistan and the Ukraine in your community. Clubs are needed to host 6-participant delegations for 8 days and nights and prepare a professional program related to business, community, and civic life in the United States.

The program focuses primarily on developing a network of leaders who have an understanding of how American communities deal with contemporary issues and who want to maintain contact with their new American contacts and other counterparts. Often, these collaborations lead to service projects between Rotary clubs in the two countries."

The Board of Directors met last week. Here's a few bits from the meeting:
  • Scott Swan is our rep to the Greater Boise Rotary Foundation (GBRF) They will meet 12/4
  • We have agreed to help the Idaho Senior Games put on a fun walk event in the spring
  • Financial report looks good - we are VERY solvent!
  • Ally and Charles will represent our club on the District Ethics in Business Committee
  • Scott is going to the Ri Convention in Korea next year!
  • Going forward, our speaker books will be donated to the "Book it Forward" forward at The Cabin
  • EREY day will be Feb 2

This holiday, give gifts that give twice…I mean three times! Dunia Marketplace, in Boise’s historic Hyde Park, is Idaho’s only Fair Trade store. They have a large inventory of goods handmade by artisans in developing countries—such as Sierra Leone and Guatemala, where we have international service connections—as well as local non-profits like Artisans For Hope and Create Common Good. Buying their handicrafts provides living wages, supports communities and cooperatives with jobs and clean water, and keeps kids in school.

But that’s not all! Do your shopping on December 2 from 5:00 to 9:00 because it’s Polio Plus Night. Fifteen percent of your purchase will be donated to the Rotary International Polio Plus fund. We are “this close” to eradicating that cruel disease. So your purchases will make a difference on many levels, in many parts of the world. Tell a friend and help spread the word! We’ll have Rotary fellowship and snacks and a fire pit blazing on the patio, too.

See you there!

The Rotary theme this year is ‘Be a Gift to the World.’   Boise Metro makes a different in our community on the greenbelt, through Senior Games, Idaho Gives and more!  We also make a difference internally.  Here’s how:

Several of our club members have been to Guatemala to see the action of Semilla Nueva in person.  The club has approved $500 be given to the District 5400 global grant project.  Semilla Nueva means ‘new seed’ and it is working to grow better ideas for a better tomorrow in Guatemala.    With a focus on heath and sutatinability, they are working to end malnutrition and improve food and nutrion security through farmer to farmer programs.  For more information:  http://semillanueva.org

The other District 5400 global grant project that Boise Metro will financially support with $500 as part of the International program is Village Hope in Sierra Leone.  They are creating jobs and reducing poverty on the ground in Sierra Leone.  Hard hit by Ebola, Village Hope is moving past the epidemic and continues working to improve the standards of living through mentoring, education, Cassava and Gari.  http://villagehopeinc.org/index.html
