Our speaker this week will be Angela Rossman, representing a group you've probably not heard of : Great Old Broads for Wilderness. She can talk to us about the dispute over building an airstrip in the foothills.
Great Old Broads for Wilderness: Working to preserve & protect wilderness since 1989.
Great Old Broads for Wilderness is a national organization that engages and ignites the activism of elders to preserve and protect wilderness and wild lands. Conceived by older women who love wilderness, Broads gives voice to the millions of older Americans who want to protect their public lands as Wilderness for this and future generations. We bring knowledge, commitment, and humor to the movement to protect our last wild places on earth.
Before you know it, October will be here and so will the Russians! Under Rotary International's Open World Program our club has been given the opportunity to host a group of 4 or 5 Russians (and their interpreter) for the week of October 7 through 15. Our responsibility will be to host/house them and provide a week of exceptional hospitality and informative visits/events and excursions. Cornelia Sprung will be heading up our committee. Start thinking about the activities that might be meaningful. More details to follow.
FLASH! We ave just learned that Gayle Knepper, a Rotarian from Alaska and frequent guest at our club, will be here this week. She has experience with One World. In fact, she even knows the club that is sponsoring our visitors! She'll tell us all about it!!
Past District Governor Ken Howell paid us a visit last week to present our club with a PRESIDENTIAL CITATION from Rotary International. RI President Ravi Ravinran had issued a challenge to clubs last year to achieve certain levels of membership, Foundation giving, activities, and so on. We were one of only FIVE clubs in our District to win the award!
Two bits of good news to report: First, WE HAVE A SITE! We met with the City Parks guys last week and we settled on a great spot between the "Trestle Bridge" and the connector overpass. Its flat and may even have water available. Next, we'll wait for the parks folks to come back to us with some preliminary drawings. Second, our District grant for $3900 toward the cost of the interpretive signs was approved!! Yeah! I also dropped a note to the Mayor's office saying that of the city plans to have a "ribbon cutting" party, which I certainly hope they will, that we'd like to be a part of it. Look for the new path to be open for traffic by the end of August.
As many of you may already know, I have taken "The Shoes to South Africa Challenge" where I will bring 100 pairs of the "Shoe That Grows" to orphanage(s) in need located just outside of Rustenberg South Africa. These shoes have been created by fellow Nampa Rotarian, Kenton Lee, through his organization http://www.becauseinternational.org.
I will be working closely with the Rotary Club of Rustenberg South Africa to distribute these shoes to the orphans on August 13th.
Many of us are so blessed to have at the very least the basic essentials to be healthy. Unfortunately, not everyone in the world is born with these basic needs covered.
I am a few hundred dollars away from my goal of 2 Duffles of Shoes. Each duffle holds 50 pairs of the shoes that grows which fits a young child from age 4 to 9 or age 9 to 14 and only costs $15/pair.
I appreciate your consideration of a donation.
