Our speaker this week will be Don Reiman, Mary's husband, former Metro member, avid cyclist, now a member of Boise Downtown. He'll be here to tell us about his new book ReSet, "Harnessing Change, Fear and Risk, as Catalysts for an Extraordinary Life". Check it out here:http://donreimancfp.com/
Want to know more about Rotary? If you've been a member for three years or less (actually, anybody!) join us on Tuesday the 10th for an informal "Rotary Chat". We'll meet at the Grind Modern Burger from 4-6PM. (705 W. Fulton between Capital and 8th). So stop by after work for some Rotary conversation! Learn more about this awesome organization you have joined! We hope to see you there!
Join Rotarians from all over the country on a bike ride in Tucson, AZ, on November 21, to raise funds for End Polio Now. The El Tour de Tucson is one of the country's premier bike rides for the past 33 years. Since 2009, the ride has benefited Polio Plus, raising over $10 million. Mary Reiman and Jeff Larsen of Boise Metro Rotary is leading a group from our District to participate. Rotary homestays can be arranged and your bike can be transported for you (so you can fly). There are rides of 40, 60, 80 or 110 miles. There's a 5 mile "fun ride" or you can participate at home or at your club on your stationary bike!
For complete details on the trip, please download the fact sheet here. Click here for the event website. If you are unable to make the trip, Mary is accepting pledges! This event can help our club meet its' Polio Plus goal.
Last Thursday evening, after a nice dinner of Mexican food and conversation at Guadalajara, seven Rotarians, along with friends and spouses, joined a group of other volunteers at the Idaho Food Bank. We worked on two projects. First, we "built" 560 lunch bags. Every week, (or is it month?) the Food Bank prepares 4200 bags of healthy goodies, enough to tide a hungry kid over a weekend. The food bags are put into a non-descript backpack and handed out to qualifying kids on Fridays. They return the empty backpack to school on Monday.
Once we had run out of sunflower seeds, the production line stopped and we shifted over to the sorting room. There were tubs upon tubs of unsorted food donations that had to be sorted and boxed. This is what the Food Bank calls "re-pack". These boxes are then distributed to more than 100 member agencies throughout the state.
The volunteer operation at the Food Bank is really impressive! We'll look forward to going back! Thanks to the following Rotarians: Reiman, Sprung, Gott, Heschler, Tower, Biggs and Barnes!
Congratulations to Cornelia Sprung on achieving her first Paul Harris Fellowship. And to Roger Brazier who was awarded
his second! Remember, during your Rotary career, as you you accumulate "points" in your Rotary Foundation account you earn a Paul Harris Award every time you reach 1,000 points.
Our friends at Semilla Nueva in Guatemala are making huge progress. Here are two links you can use to keep up to date - their blogpost and their Facebook page.
Our quests last week were Harold, Don and Paul - three vets from the American Legion. I think we were all impressed at all the things they do for our community. Who knew? For example:
