Our Open World delegation from Tomsk, Siberia, arrived just a few minutes late on their flight from Washington DC via SF. They had spent two days on D.C. so they had acclimated at least a little bit to flying halfway around the world. Their host families met them at the airport with cheers and cowbells. The fun begins tomorrow!
The Sprung/Biggs team had the honor of showing our Russian friends around our fair city on Day One. Mission this day - visit at least 8 local artists on the annual BOSCO Studio Tour. (There were 40 artists, but if you visited 8 you were eligible to win a great prize!) We all met at River City Coffee as planned, boarded our really long Ford rental van, and hit the road about 11:00. It took until after 5:00 but we did mange to visit 8 artists! They were so different from one another! And so entertaining! We saw artists in big fancy houses with big, fancy paintings, artists with messy studios in their garage, a fascinating Russian women (a hoarder, sort of), husband and wife with totally different mediums. We spend a fascinating hour with an artist with a disability, who was also a "rat rescuer". She wasn't much of an artist, but she certainly educated our guests on the challenges of being disabled in America. Its a lot more challenging in Russia - they don't have an ADA to help them. In between, we managed lunch at the downtown Boise Co-op. It was a great day!!
The spectacular summer-like weather continues! Several of our guests visited local churches this Sunday morning. After lunch with host families, we gathered at the coffee shop and took off for the Birds of Prey. The birds were out and about and displayed some awesome flying skills. By late afternoon, it was nearing 80 degrees, so all headed for Quinn's Pond for paddle boarding lessons - an entirely new experience! Nothing like skiing! So this completed our two "play days", tomorrow its down to work, well, mostly.............
During this week while our Russian friends are here, there are lots of activities you can join! On Friday, our Fellowship Committee has put together a Vodka Social.6:30 to 8:30 at the Tuscany clubhouse in Meridian . This will be the evening before our guests leave us. Admission will be $10 for the first ticket, $5 for additional tickets. Or, free if you bring a bottle of vodka! 44 North will be there with `ome outtanding Idaho vodka.
There will be a raffle too! A Bloody Mary Baket valued at $75.00.
Mary Reiman is busy preparing for the Polio Ride in Tucson in November. Her personal goal is to raise $3,000 for Polio Plus. You can give Mary a check or go online and donate, letting her know you did that. Bret V. reports that his recent bike ride in the mountains was a blast, even tho bad weather caused him to stop early, but he reached his goal of $1,000, which he matched!
We are on our way to 410 dozen long stem, red roses! Our guy at DWF Florist, Tim Harrigfeld, will deliver the roses and greens to Borah High School early Monday morning, October 24th. The Horticulture class, led by teacher Jeremy Thompson, will put together the bouquets. A Limited number of orders will be available at our meeting on the 25th, the rest can be picked up a day or two later at Borah. (Note: Dave Thornton has bet a lunch with Scott Swan for the most sold)
Many thanks to Mike Sieler from Eagle/Garden City Rotary for telling us about the Greater Boise Rotary foundation (GBRF).............I've been working on my Russian - I think its hopeless...........sorry to hear that the Boise West Rotary Club (The Club for Adventurous Types) has folded. They were an experimentl - no meal, meet at a pub. They just couldn't maintain the critical mass...........
