THIS WEEK - COMPOSTING
You've heard about the proposal form Boise to start composting? This week Catherine Churtudi, Director of the city's Solid Waste Program, will tell us all about it.
PARTING WORDS FROM PRESIDENT JANICE
What a great year this has been!   There are so many things our club has accomplished – all Rotarians together with our family, friends, and employers supporting our efforts!    Boise Metro has so much to celebrate that I can’t possibly include it all in the newsletter.  Highlights include:

  • Increased membership – welcome new members!
  • Celebrated with Bret Vaterlaus and others the Rotary Grand Plaza progress at Julia Davis Park
  • Leadership in youth programs with the international exchange program hosting an outbound, and inbound, and RYLA camp
  • Launched the phased Greenbelt project with brick purchases, ongoing awareness, and a three-club grant application this year
  • Securing the Open World host program with Russia to occur in October 2016
  • Ongoing service through the Dictionary Program, annual United Way book drive, Idaho Senior Games, el Tour de Tucson,  Idaho Food Bank, YMCA walks/runs, Usful Glass, and much more.  Just think about how many people our club touches through the small projects
  • The weekly programs where we learn something new about a business, about a nonprofit, about each other, as well as people in our local community and globally.
  • The increase in support for the Rotary Foundation.   Our club is currently trending as #1 across the district in per capita giving!  You are an amazing group of philanthropists and this really is something to celebrate.

For a successful volunteer organization to accomplish as much as Boise Metro, there is A LOT of great work and volunteerism that goes on each week.   Everyone in the club contributes and I appreciate what you each do to make it great.   From the weekly attendance and fellowship, to the ‘boring yet important’ stuff like correspondence with Rotary International – it all makes a difference.

From the newest members to the founders of the club, what you may see as a small contribution is big!   When you smile and have fun, help find a speaker, volunteer to speak, pray, lead the pledge, lead a song, fill in and facilitate a meeting, be the Sgt at Arms, write a newsletter, tote stuff, attend a District meeting, assemble a cart, buy books, deliver books, organize a service event, greet guests, or call someone you haven’t seen in a while - by doing any one or all of these you increase the Rotary experience for everyone.  Thank you for being a member of Boise Metro!

In addition to Allan Bosch and John Schubin, help me recognize the following Rotarians with a special thanks for their contributions to Boise Metro during 2015-2016:

  • Mary Reiman who with enthusiasm and commitment brings Boise Metro great speakers and field trips every week – 52 weeks a year she touches the program
  • Roger Brazier who does so much behind the scenes for Boise Metro including the Dictionary Project, filling in as Sgt at Arms, and ongoing club guidance
  • Buck Harris who manages the club finances, cash flow, check writing, along with the questions about credit card processing, and RI contributions.  How many times did he hear me ask “Buck, tell me again about how we…….”   And he would tell me again and with a smile
  • John Biggs who writes our weekly bulletin, keeps the club up to date on communication and club image, and works likewise at the District level.
  • Cornelia Sprung who has managed the correspondence and the very important stuff that keeps us in line with Rotary International.   From attendance reporting to the Open World application; fellowship coordination and Facebook page development – Cornelia quietly moves Boise Metro forward with accuracy and commitment
  • A huge thank you to Charles, Allan, and Cahill who without fail would lead the club in song.  For someone like me who absolutely loves music, yet fully lacks musical talent, this is meaningful
  • To Dave Thornton and Scott Swan.  The role of president is a multi-year commitment.  It starts with President Elect and continues until the role of Past President concludes.   Many thanks to Dave and Scott!

As you reflect on what you enjoyed this year, share your thanks and appreciation with your fellow Rotarians because together we each make a difference to each other and our community.

Yours in Rotary and with much appreciation,
Janice
CHANGING OF THE GUARD WAS GREAT FUN!
Changing of the Guard was on Thursday, June 16th and attended by more than 40 people.   While no one was dunked in the pool, a good time was had by all!   The evening included appetizers, a BBQ meal, and entertainment by ComedySportz.  Their finale was a 4 minute blitz that included mime and gibberish and ended the evening with grins and giggles!   Janice thanked the outgoing board, presented the two annual awards for Service Above Self and Rotarian of the Year along with many, many thank you’s (see below).   Scott welcomed the new Board of Directors and presented Dave Thornton with recognition for his Rose Sale leadership.    What an awesome club!

SHOES THAT GROW IN A DUFFLE BAG

As many of you may already know, I have taken "The Shoes to South Africa Challenge" where I will bring 100 pairs of the "Shoe That Grows" to orphanage(s) in need located just outside of Rustenberg South Africa.  These shoes have been created by fellow Nampa Rotarian, Kenton Lee, through his organization  http://www.becauseinternational.org.

I will be working closely with the Rotary Club of Rustenberg South Africa to distribute these shoes to the orphans on August 13th.

Many of us are so blessed to have at the very least the basic essentials to be healthy. Unfortunately, not everyone in the world is born with these basic needs covered.
I am a few hundred dollars away from my goal of 2 Duffles of Shoes.  Each duffle holds 50 pairs of the shoes that grows which fits a young child from age 4 to 9 or age 9 to 14 and only costs $15/pair.
I appreciate your consideration of a donation.

WE'LL ASSIST JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN AUGUST
John Schubin, our champion for Junior Achievement, is planning to schedule a project day for us sometime in August. The project will be to assist JA staff sort and re-make teacher/mentor packets. We did this last year and it was a big help to the mentors. The date will be announced soon!
TUCSON RIDE COMMITTEE FORMS
The next El Tour de Tucson to raise money for Polio Plus will be Nov 17th. Mary Reiman wants to get some folks together to promote the event. It would be great to get other Rotarians from around the district to participate. Jeff Larsen has a trailer that can carry 20 bikes, so that's no excuse! Last year our four Rotarians raised a lot of money! This year, we'll have an "indoor" ride on stationary bikes at home to do even better!
ODDS 'N ENDS
Our guests this week were Phil and Bobbi Brubaker, visiting  Rotarians from Florence, Oregon.......they thought our website was the best, which is why they chose to visit our club! ........did you know that New Jersey has more solar panels than Idaho? That's because their electricity is three times more expensive than ours...............  Exciting News: Dave Wilson has graduated from our Test Drive Rotary program and will be joining officially!....... Allan should be a grandpa any minute!.........Schubins are going to Europe, have tickets to a European Championship soccer match.......watch out for Russian hooligans, John............Congrats to Scott Swan and his team - they took 1st place in the Sawtooth Relay.... After 40 years, The Pantry is closing! we'll have to find a new place to hold our Board meetings...... Reminder, NO MEETING ON JULY 5TH - Enjoy the holiday!
