As District 5400 Membership Chair, I get to have a lot of conversations about new Rotary members and importantly, keeping the Rotary members we've got. Our more recent membership calls have focused on membership retention. In the Covid-19 period, we have also discussed taking care of our Rotarians, the members of our own clubs. In just three short weeks,  we all have an opportunity to take care of each other and honor our good work as Rotarians.

On Friday, May 15th Rotary District 5400 will be having its annual conference (now called a Celebration) called 20-20 Vision: Seeing the Future. This is an ongoing opportunity to come together as a district consisting of 44 Rotary clubs all over central and southern Idaho and a smidge of Oregon. These are clubs just like yours that work hard all year long to make a difference in their communities and across the world...by raising funds for scholarships, feeding the hungry and generating polio vaccinations. There is something very powerful when a group of people like that come together in one place, and in this instance that place will be in a virtual Zoom conference.

So, why should you attend? REASON #1 It is absolutely free this year. Yes, that's right. The typical costs of travel, lodging, meals and registration are not an issue in this year of not normal. All you have to do is sign up on the district website by clicking the Registration button and entering your name and Club name. It really is that simple!

REASON #2  ATTEND THIS YEAR’S DISTRICT CONFERENCE IN YOUR BATHING SUIT, YOUR HAWAIIAN SHIRT OR MOO MOO, BECAUSE YOU WON’T EVEN HAVE TO LEAVE HOME TO PARTICIPATE!  In fact, the theme is a Luau, so Hawaiian attire is encouraged.  No suits, no ties, no high heels and no uncomfortable dress shoes. Flip flops or bare feet is the order of the evening!

REASON #3  Support your District! The sole purpose of District 5400 and its leadership team is to support the 44 clubs throughout the District...to help them provide leadership, to help them grow, and to help them thrive. No other reason.

REASON #4  Support your Club! The McCall Payette Lakes Rotary Club will again be recognized this year for its outstanding work. We have been very fortunate to enjoy strong leadership throughout the District this year as each team has navigated many challenging and unprecedented issues over these past months. Club Presidents have led with grace and calm under pressure. Under usual circumstances, many of us would assemble in a great big room, eat chicken, and clap when folks were acknowledged. Let's not pass up the opportunity to show our support and appreciation for your Club, Club President and the 2019-2020 team even if its a virtual show of support.

REASON #5  Like usual, a winner for the District Raffle will be drawn!  And you don't have to go on a cruise...you can use the Grand Prize travel certificate on anything available through AAA. They don't even expire!

REASON #6  The keynote speaker will be Chad Hymas. At the age of 27, Chad Hymas' life changed instantaneously when an accident left him a quadriplegic. Since that time Chad has been recognized by the state of Utah as the Superior Civilian of the Year. He is the president of his own communications company and an internet marketing company.  At 37 years of age Chad is the one of the youngest ever to receive the CPAE award and be inducted into the National Speaker Hall Of Fame. As a member of the National Speakers Association Chad spoke at over 220 events last year. He travels as many as 300,000 miles a year. Last year Chad spoke in 5 new countries on 4 continents, to hundreds of professional and civic organizations such as Wells Fargo, Blue Cross Blue Shield, AT&T, Rainbird, IHC, American Express, Prudential Life, Vast FX, Zion Securities, and others.

Chad is married and he and his wife are the proud parents of three children. They currently reside in Rush Valley, Utah on a 200-acre wildlife preserve. Chad is a world-class wheelchair athlete enjoying basketball, wheelchair rugby, hang-gliding, and snow skiing. In July 2003 Chad set a World Record by wheeling a personal marathon of over 500 miles from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas. Chad is also the author of the regionally best-selling book Doing What Must Be Done.

Chad Hymas will not only inspire, motivate, and move you, he will create an experience that will touch your heart for a lifetime. Chad's topics focus on the areas of Leadership, Team building, Customer Service, and Mastering Change!

ONE FINAL REASON and perhaps the only one that really matters is that Covid-19 has taken a lot away from all of us. It has impacted our lives in dramatic ways. Our normal ways of being have been turned upside down, our ability to share fellowship has changed, and topsy turvy, for the moment, is the new normal. What has not changed, however, is the fact that we are Rotarians and on May 15th we can take a couple of hours and support Rotarians. Please do.
