This week we'll learn how the Ada County Highway Department makes and keeps track of all those highway construction signs that are all over the place! We'll start with a bag lunch at PERIGRINE PARK in Garden City. It is located just behind the GC Senior Center on 38th and Reed St, off Adams St. There is only one small table there, so you may want a lawn chair in your car. (By the way, our Rotary club built that little park many years ago). Then we'll make our way over to ACHD location at the corner of N. Adams Street & E. 37th Street in Garden City. A map is attached which shows the lunch meeting spot and our tour start time. We'll get the tour to start about 12:20 so that we can quickly eat. If you're late, you may have a sandwich for your drive after the tour.
Our annual Rose Sale is underway!! Scott Swan is the head honcho (that's what past presidents do!). They are a dozen red roses for $30 per dozen. Our goal is to sell 450 dozen! This is our clubs major fundraiser for the year which supports a variety of our projects. On the club website, under "Club Documents" you will find the order form to record your sales and report along with some receipt forms. If you click here, you'll go to the "sales pitch that Scott uses, quite successfully!
Our newest member, a transfer from Boise Centennial Rotary, is Michela Swarthout (that's mi-kel-uh, and you do pronounce the "th"). She was born in Portland, OR but grew up in Boise, attending Boise High. After some college experiences in New York City, LA and Denver she returned to Boise. She is the Intellectual Property Manager for CPA global, a software company in Boise. She is married to James Hepworth, our next-to-newest member, and has 2 step daughters. Michela's hobbies are wake surfing, boxing, fitness, graphic design. She has been an important part of our Greenbelt Committee since the beginning.
It occurs to one, when imagining sitting on one of our benches overlooking the river, that you can clearly see the "Trestle Bridge". What's that there for? Good question! So, we're adding that to our history lesson. Not only will be tell about "Government Island", but we'll also tell about the "Trestle Bridge". The existing bridge was built in 1923. That's not the original bridge, but it represents the Rail crossing by the Oregon Short Line Railroad which built a spur from the Depot up on the "bench" down to the railyard on what is now Front Street. In the late 1800s when the Union Pacific was making its way across the country, business people in Boise were upset that they ran the main line up on the hill - too hard to get to!
Spread the word that we have a challenge - a benefactor will contribute $50 for each brick sold to the end of October. Have you bought yours yet? We should be able to complete our fundraising by the end of October! Yea! A lot depends on how well we do at the Telaya Wine event on October 20th.
Hello Fellow Rotarians! Last year my son Harrison got really excited to help South Sudan have better access to clean water. Thanks for all of your support! Last month, he asked if he could sell muffins again for another water project… so we are making muffins! This year the Wise family will be making clay filters in Dominican Republic to help Haitians and Dominicans have access to clean water in December. The organization we will be working with is Wine to Water. (Please watch the video link at the bottom, they have been partnering with Rotary) All donations will go towards the material supplies to make more filters at the factory near Santiago, DR.
It was an honor to host Terry Jones, our District Governor, last week. Couldn't help but notice the large glass of milk he had with his lunch......he reminded us that the Zone 27 meeting will be in Boise next Fall - we'll have a lot of work to do..........our guests last week were Dawn Hickman, our Assistant Governor, and Tyson's daughter............watch for details on a special Halloween event on October 28th.......Congratulations to Rick Holscher, Bryan McCoy, and Nate Pierce. on earning a Paul Harris pin!
