As you know, the Rotary year begins July 1st. It always amazes me to think that, in an organization as big and diverse as Rotary, every single leadership position, from RI President to local Club officers, turns over at the same time!
Rotary International's new President is Shekhar Mehta from India (see this week's Rotary magazine), our new District Governor is Russell Johnson from Idaho Falls, the new President of Boise Metro is Shiloh Shaver. Also, each year the RI President has his own Presidential Theme and Logo for his year. This year's theme is "Serve to Change Lives".
What a great time we had at Wednesday's Pass the Gavel banquet at the Cottonwood! The venue was a perfect size for our numbers, the food was delicious and the service was great! Our magician/comedian Kipp provided lots of laughs! Will was quite clever as he presented a variety of plants as appreciation gifts for his outgoing Board. Each plant represented the qualities of its recipient. Will talked about the challenges of his year but the crowd applauded his successes, in spite of the Covid year. Shiloh presented her vision for the club this year. She's determined to keep the fun going!
The Stonehouse is not yet ready to reopen for our weekly gatherings. As an alternative, starting July 13th through the end of August, we will meet at Life's Kitchen on 8574 W. Fairview - you remember, the old Marie Callender? They have the Hayden Beverage Banquet Room which sounds perfect! We've heard about Life's Kitchen before. Having our meetings there supports their mission!
Life’s Kitchen is a nonprofit social enterprise providing Opportunity Youth (aka at-risk youth) 16-24 years of age with wrap-around work and life skills. Through our Workforce Development, Food Service, Life Skills, and GED Training Program, trainees receive the valuable skills and resources they need to become independent, financially stable, and successful. https://www.lifeskitchen.org/
Roger Brazier has been a member of Boise Metro for longer than almost anybody. Back in the day, somehow, he ended up the curator of some archival materials from our club, which now reside in the basement of his office building. He's not exactly sure what's there, or if its of any real value, but it really needs a new home. Maybe we should form a committee to go through the stuff and see what we should keep. What treasures await!!
The Nampa Rotary Club is hosting our 31st Annual Golf for Hope tournament on Friday, August 27, at Ridgecrest Golf Club in Nampa. I'd like to invite you to consider having your club organize a team and join in the fun and support of this event and help us raise a lot of money for the Hope House. For more information about this event or to sign up a team, please go to the Golf For Hope website: https://www.golf4hope.org/ I've also attached a flyer with sponsorship information.
Mark your calendar for our July service project on 7/22. There is a lot to do so this one is all-hands-on-deck! The United Way is holding a literacy party and our Rotary club will be the volunteer labor to help pull it off. Watch for more details and a volunteer sign-up sheet soon. We will need Rotarians to do set-up, staff activity and game booths, read stories to kiddos, provide directions to kids and parents, and help with clean-up afterwards. Bring a friend or family member to help!
