Our speaker this week will be Ed Schultz, Relationship Manager for United Way of Treasure Valley. We will gain an understanding of the needs in our area, how we make decisions regarding what work we do and the strategies for that work, who our target demographic is, and examples of our work and results. The presentation will be rich with examples. Read about UWTV here.
Last December we elected our club officers for the Rotary year beginning July 1st. All, that is, except for President-Elect. That person will take the helm after Jeff's year July of 2024. We are pleased to report that Janet Hasson has stepped up to take that position! She's only been a member for a couple of months but has already become an active and valuable member of our club.
Recall this bio from January:
Janet Hasson will be inducted to our club this week. Born and raised in Spokane, she graduated from Eastern Washington Univ. Her entire career has been in the newspaper business. The first 15 years was spent with the Spokesman Review. She then joined the Gannett group which took her all over the country in newspaper management positions, seven moves! Cincy, Boise (99-05), Rochester, Westchester, Providence. Two years ago she retired and returned to Boise. She likes to keep busy as a volunteer such as Girl Scouts. She's familiar with Rotary through her time with newspapers, but has not joined a club, until now. Janet has 3 grown children. Her hobbies include reading, outdoor activities, travel and, now, a return to skiing. Welcome Janet!
Again this year, Cornelia is organizing a food drive for our Muslim immigrant friends who will celebrate Ramadan in the month of April. She'll be sending us a shopping list and ask that we bring groceries to our club meetings for the next few weeks. On April 30th we'll have a "delivery blitz" to distribute the goods.
After a two year hiatus due to Covid, the Rotary Youth Exchange program is back! This is a long running Rotary program where high school kids will come to the US for a year. They'll live with local "host families" (usually three), attend our public schools and generally become a part of our community. We are not being asked to host this year, but we do need a Coordinator and a Counselor (Cornelia has volunteered for the latter). Let Shiloh know if you want more information.
Plans are nearly complete for this year's District Conference in beautiful Sun Valley, May 20-21. District leadership promises a great event, including the Saturday evening banquet (featuring Brian Shul, a fighter pilot with a fascinating story) and a variety of service projects on Saturday afternoon. The best advice is to stay at the Sun Valley Hotel so you don't miss any of the action! We have a block of rooms reserved - $179/ night. For more details check the District 5400 website. Early registration ends March 31. Every Rotarian should attend a District Conference. Our club will reimburse attendees $100, toward your bar bill. Cornelia will be creating a "giving tree" of gift cards for the silent auction.
All Rotarians are Encouraged to Support the - Disaster Relief Fund - for Ukraine - In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has created an official channel for Rotary members around the world to contribute funds to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary Districts and has designated its Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions.
Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund in support of Ukraine can be made online at Disaster Response Fund | My Rotary. All funds need to be received into the Disaster Response Fund by 30 April, 2022 in order to qualify for use in support of the Ukrainian relief efforts.
Now through 30 April, 2022, Rotary districts can transfer unallocated District Designated Funds (DDF) to support the Disaster Response Fund, directly supporting these Ukraine-specific humanitarian grants.
During this same period, other impacted Rotary districts that wish to offer support to refugees or other victims of the crisis in their district can apply for $25,000 grants from the Disaster Response Fund.
Now through 30 June, 2022, designated Rotary Districts that border Ukraine and the Rotary district in Ukraine may apply for grants of up to $50,000 each from the Disaster Response Fund. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to provide relief to refugees or other victims of the crisis including items such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing.
