THIS WEEK - FACIAL RECOGNITION
Elisa Barney Smith is a professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering department at Boise State University in Boise Idaho.

Professor Barney’s main research interests are image processing and machine learning. She applies these to document imaging as well as to facilitate image processing for disparate areas from biomedical image processing to materials science research to soil remediation evaluation.

Dr. Barney will tell us about a facial recognition project they've been working on. Here's a TedX talk from last June

EVERYDAY LEADERSHIP EXPLAINED
Everyday Leadership is an afterschool program for select at-risk 5th and 6th graders in Title One Schools in the Boise School District. It focuses on teaching life skills and building self-esteem.

This is a collaboration with the Boise School District, YMCA, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Boise Sunrise Rotary Club. In December, we heard from Bob Rainville of Sunrise Rotary and Sonia Galaviz, our outstanding 5th Grade Teacher who leads the Garfield program. They shared with us the great results of the Everyday Leadership Program our Boise Metro Rotary Club supports at Garfield Elementary School. Outcomes being achieved include: positive behavioral changes, improved grades, reduced disciplinary incidences, high selection for other leadership programs. I have attached Bob’s presentation.

In all, 6 Title One Schools in Boise are involved. Long term goals are to expand to all Boise Title One Schools by 2021/22. We also seek to inspire adoption by other Treasure Valley School Districts.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR DISTRICT CELEBRATION
Its not too soon to make your reservations for the District 5400 Celebration in Pocatello May 15-16. Click here for more details. Registration is open and you can get early bird discounts up to April 1st.
GREENBELT STANCHIONS
The stanchions that will hold our three interpretive signs at the Greenbelt Park have been fabricated by Trademark. The design is to reflect the design of the nearby trestle bridge. We're hoping that the final pieces of our project will be completed this spring - moving the monument, installing the second batch of bricks and installing the signs. (We wonder if the spring bulbs are poking through?)
PLANTING PROJECTS NEED VOLUNTEERS
Boise Metro Rotary will be participating in "ReLeaf Boise" Day, a project to plant trees in the public right of way sponsored by Boise Parks and Recreation. I am looking for volunteers to sign up for this. I know it seems early but the City needs an accurate group size in order to plan how many trees each group will need. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who thinks they can fit this into their schedule. It will be on April 25, from approximately 8am-1:00pm. If you respond yes, and later have to cancel, I can find someone to take your place.

We also are participating in a Rotary tree planting day on March 28th from 10:00am to noon. This involves planting 1000 seedlings for riparian restoration along the Greenbelt near the Willow Creek Athletic Club on Saturday.  More details will be coming soon. Thanks to all and I am hoping to hear back from a few of you in the next few weeks.
