Our guest speaker this week will be Dana Thorpe Patterson, Director of the OSHER Institute at Boise State.
Endowed by The Bernard Osher Foundation, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Boise State University is a membership-based lifelong learning program. We offer a wide variety of college-level, non-credit programs designed for intellectually curious adults age 50 and over. Boise State University is among a cadre of 125 universities and colleges throughout the country that are endowed by The Bernard Osher Foundation. We are the only one in Idaho.
Bob Rainville, from Sunrise Rotary, is our leader for the Everyday Leadership program. Bob has been the cheerleader for years. Sunrise, and our club, are the two in the District who support the program. We contribute $3500 each year. Our efforts are concentrated at Garfield Elementary, but the program is now in all nine of the Title 9 schools, reaching nearly 1000 young people. There are ways for us to participate in person. Stay tuned for more!
On behalf of you district leadership team, we would like to share a message we received from our fellow Rotarian District Governor Mark Merriam of District 5000, which covers the Hawaiian Islands.
Aloha,
"Today has been a tragic day for our Rotarians, families and friends on the Island of Maui. The fires across the island have changed lives forever. Truly devastating. Our sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted.
As people of action, we can take immediate action. As we come together to recover and rebuild, we need to support each other. We need to Create Hope for Maui.
Through our Rotary District 5000 Foundation, a relief fund has been established. Foundation President Dave Hamil and Treasurer Sharon Amano will handle all donations. A committee will be organized shortly to find the greatest needs for distribution of monies. A single fund will be the most helpful over time to provide the most significant benefits.
Many of you have seen coverage of the devastation that has occurred including at least 114 people losing their lives. There are 9 Rotary clubs on the island of Maui, and we know that many of our fellow Rotarians have been impacted. We have an opportunity to help them directly through a donation.
The JEMfriends Golden Gala is our premier opportunity for the JEMfriends community to come together and celebrate all that we have accomplished, meet the JEMyouth, hear their stories, and give as a community to ensure that we can continue to provide stepping stones to independence. This year's Golden Gala is going to be a special event as we celebrate15 years of helping aged-out and at-risk youth in the Treasure Valley. The Gala will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at the Riverside Hotel. The doors will open at 4:00pm for a social hour with a cash bar, photo booth, raffle, and other activities. The event will start at 5:15pm and will include dinner, a time of giving, hearing inspirational stories from JEMyouth and others, and a live auction. Dress is semi-formal.
