The Dictionaries are here, all 225 of them! We'll have a party to affix the Rotary "plates" on Friday, November 22 at 4:30 at RedBuilt. Be preared to take the books you have agreed to deliver to the 3rd graders!
Last Friday we had our official Shark Pond presentations. Our panel of judges heard "pitches" from Miles Kububa in Zambia and Emmanuel Asare Osei in Ghana. Miles is a young fellow wanting to invest in a Shwarma maker for his fast food business. Emmanuel wants to invest in a motortricycle to transport the plastic he collects from his agents.
Our panel voted to approve Emmanuel's proposal and award him a grant of $1,000 which will be repaid over 24 months at 0%. His business is eye-opening! Since there is little potable water in his city of 8 million, EVERYTHING somes in plastic bottles; which are summarily tossed aside. There is no attempt at "recycling" as we know it. Emmanuel pays "agents" to collect the plastic and then sells these huge bags (actually mosquito nets) to three companies who will then crush/shred/melt the plastic for use in building materials, fabric, etc. So his mission is much larger than just plastic bottles. He's providing jobs for an underserved population; elderly women, disabled folks who act as "agents".
We were pleased to welcome Steve Gage, District Governor, to our meeting last week. He came to present us with a special Polio Plus Award. We were #2 in the District in trhe 22-23 Rotary Year.
Roger reported on our giving to date. We're doing great! We're at 44% of goal for the Foundation, and 85% of goal for Polio Plus (thanks to Bret!).
Mary presented Richard with his Paul Harris Plus 6! Look for a challenge from the the Big West Zone to add 500 Paul Harris Fellows by the end of the year.
As we head into Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, it's time once again for us to think of youth in the JEMfriends transitional homes in our gift giving.
If you see something you wish to purchase, please put your name on that row so we don't accidentally double up. On the list, you'll see gifts in all sizes, from $10 to $200.
If going to stores doesn't thrill you, just buy online and ship it to my attention at RedBuilt, 200 E. Mallard Drive, Boise 83706. Several items have links supplied.
We received the wishlist early this year, so we have a whole month to get things purchased. As in past years, we'll wrap the gifts, and sign some group cards, at our holiday fellowship event (date TBD).
