BOARD MEETING TUESDAY 7:15
THIS WEEK - LEARN MORE ABOUT MINIDOKA
Our speaker this week will be Ronald Bush, Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge. He will tell us about the "Nisei Paradox".

Despite being at war, the armed services first refused to enlist volunteers from the ranks of those who had been relocated.  Later, a decision was made to allow volunteer enlistment of Japanese-American men and then later still a decision was made to draft all eligible young men interned in concentration camps.

A greater percentage of young men from Idaho’s concentration camp at Minidoka voluntarily enlisted than from any other of the concentration camps.  But some refused induction asking why they should be forced to fight for a country that deprived them of the very freedoms they were being asked to defend.  Dozens of young men were prosecuted as draft resisters in Idaho Federal court.

T SHIRTS ARE IN!
For those of you who ordered your polo shirts a few weeks back, don't forget to bring your money for this Tuesday's meeting! Long Sleeve Polos where $40 and Short Sleeve Polos were $35.

EVERYDAY LEADERSHIP - PUT ANOTHER WAY
Objective
Everyday Leadership is a collaborative effort created to provide Treasure Valley low-income 5th and 6th grade youth with the skills and self-confidence they need to graduate from high school and attain post-high school educations.

Importance
Students who fail to graduate from high school or achieve post-high school training become a breeding ground for the social and economic issues in Treasure Valley communities

High school graduation rates are about 80%.  Only 42% of Idaho’s workforce has obtained post-high school training .

Fifth and sixth grade students with low self-esteem and poor academics are nineteen times more likely to drop out.

Collaborators
  • Title I Schools of Boise School District
  • YMCA
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • Parents
  • Boise Sunrise and Metro Rotary Clubs

 Activities
  • Thirteen after-school sessions on leadership, teamwork, communication, cooperation, conflict resolution.
  • Service projects.
  • Leadership retreat.

GIRLS EDUCATION AT GORONGOZA
"We sent shoes to Larissa Sousa who runs the Girls Education Program outside of Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique.  Last year we managed to send 370 pairs.   I would like to get that closer to 450 for this year so if you are interested in hearing more about Gorongosa Park, the Girls Education Program or the Shoe that Grows I would encourage you to attend the meeting at Because International on March 13th at 4:00 PM.  I know that the Nampa club is well aware of the shoe that grows due to the fact they have been supporting Kenton, also a member, for a number of years.  However it would be great to get the knowledge of what all is going on in Gorongosa out to more of the Treasure Valley clubs so if Charlene can make that happen with Boise Metro that would be wonderful."

Please let me know if anyone is interested in going so I can give Kenton a heads up on how many to expect and keep you advised if something unforeseen happens with Larissa’s travel arrangements.
