SPECIAL NOTICE - ALBERTSON'S
Special reminder - this week we'll have our regular meeting at the Broadway Albertson's in their upstairs meeting room called "Broadway on the Rocks". This will be a test to see if it might be a good place for us to "live". Grab lunch or a drink and come on up!   (The parking lot should be finished by now!)
THIS WEEK - REPORT FROM GHANA
We have a special treat this week, providing the technology Gods are with us. As you know, for the past year or so we have sponsored Emmanuel and his recycling business Gabbymot Anzaldi. Part of our commitment to Emmanuel was to act a mentor and assist him as he grows his business. He has upheld his end of the deal by communicating with us frequently through Whatsapp. Well, this week we'll attempt a Zoom call with Emmanuel at our meeting where can ask questions and get feel for his successes and challenges.
POLIO UPDATE
Dear Polio Eradication Warriors,

It was wonderful to see so many Rotarians dedicated to the Global Polio Eradication effort in Calgary this week!  Keep up the good work.  The year ahead looks to be the most challenging yet (as far as fundraising is concerned) in our now forty year effort to eradicate this terrible disease!

One new Wild Polio paralysis case reported this past two weeks.  We are now 5 weeks since the most recent report of a child being paralyzed by the Wild Polio Virus in Pakistan.

“The Audacity to Start the job; the Tenacity to Finish it” – PolioPlus takes center stage at Rotary Convention in Calgary

As tens of thousands of Rotarians from around the world gathered at the Rotary International Convention in Calgary, Canada, this weekend, Rotary and the Gates Foundation announced an extended partnership to end polio for good, which will see an injection of nearly half a billion dollars into the effort.  Bill Gates and WHO Director-General Dr Tedros both addressed the convention, and thanked Rotarians for their tireless efforts to helping eradicate polio and showing that “in a world where division and despair too often dominate the headlines, Rotarians are writing a different story.  That change is possible.  That equity is possible.  That peace is possible.”  Watch a video summary of the DG’s speech here and his full speech here.

ITS OFFICIAL!!
Its Official! The new Rotary year has begun! Last Tuesday Mary turned the gravel over to Cornelia who has already been up and running with great ideas.

The party at the Wise Estate was great fun. It was really hot, reaching 105 but the cool ocean breeze later made it tolerable. Competitions were everywhere - Cornhole, golf, beach volleyball, surfing. Bret brought his mountain bike (we were shocked to learn its electric!)

Cannuck Attack did a great job with our menu. Prime rib and lobster tails with the appropriate wine pairings. Thanks to Brittany for arranging the beautiful white linen table service and centerpieces. The music was amazing! We were so fortunate that the Beach Boys found some time from their busy schedule to join us.

Awards were presented:
  • Best Hair - Allan
  • Longest to travel - Tyson

So we're off and running! It's going to be a fun and productive year for our Rotary club!
