Our program this week will be Jason Burnette, Director of the Girl Scouts of Silver Sage. Jason recently recently moved to Boise from Texas; he's been with Girl Scouts for about 8 years. We had a chance to get acquainted with Jason last week when he visited our club " to find out what he was getting himself into".
The Boise East Rotary Club is collecting magazines in support of a school in Africa at which they recently sponsored a girls education project. It hinges on supporting girls during menstruation so they can remain in school with dignity. Which happens to be the cover story on the March issue of Rotarian magazine! They would like to collect copies of this magazine to send to the school. If you are finished reading your March 2022 issue, please bring it to Rotary next week.
Scott R. would have us believe that last week he was in Hawaii with his son for a fishing trip and snagged a 671 pound, 14 ft long blue marlin! The taxidermy bill is unreal, look for Scott to set up a GoFundMe account.
Janet and Cornelia represented our club at Everyday Leadership last week at Garfield Elementary School. The students were discussing communication skills and they had plenty of excellent suggestions such as: listening, voice tone, body language, empathy, pausing, and enthusiasm. We assisted with a fun activity that required two people to sit back to back, and then one person had to describe a Lego structure to the other person who had to build the same structure. It requires really clear, concise communication! We all had fun and the kids were looking forward to Spring Break.
Our First Tuesday Service Project on April 5th will be at Tyson's home at 1108 E. Lewis. We might be doing ribbons for the WCA the first Tuesday in April instead of the lunch bag thing. April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and I have been corresponding with the WCA on making ribbons for them. Just let folks know that the service project will by at my house on April 5th 12-1pm. Address: 1108 E. Lewis Street 83712.
On Tuesdays in April, we will be collecting food donations to fill grocery bags for recently arrived Afghani families. Just bring any of the following to our regular meetings:
Reusable shopping bags – you can sometimes find these for $1
Basmati rice – India Market on Fairview has 10# bags
Olive oil – any size, any brand
Whole dates – These are usually in produce
Of course donating cash is okay, too. Venmo @Cornelia-Sprung.
Plans are nearly complete for this year's District Conference in beautiful Sun Valley, May 20-21. District leadership promises a great event, including the Saturday evening banquet (featuring Brian Shul, a fighter pilot with a fascinating story) and a variety of service projects on Saturday afternoon. The best advice is to stay at the Sun Valley Hotel so you don't miss any of the action! We have a block of rooms reserved - $179/ night. For more details check the District 5400 website. Early registration ends March 31. Every Rotarian should attend a District Conference. Our club will reimburse attendees $100, toward your bar bill. Cornelia will be creating a "giving tree" of gift cards for the silent auction.
All Rotarians are Encouraged to Support the - Disaster Relief Fund - for Ukraine - In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has created an official channel for Rotary members around the world to contribute funds to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary Districts and has designated its Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions.
Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund in support of Ukraine can be made online at Disaster Response Fund | My Rotary. All funds need to be received into the Disaster Response Fund by 30 April, 2022 in order to qualify for use in support of the Ukrainian relief efforts.
Now through 30 April, 2022, Rotary districts can transfer unallocated District Designated Funds (DDF) to support the Disaster Response Fund, directly supporting these Ukraine-specific humanitarian grants.
During this same period, other impacted Rotary districts that wish to offer support to refugees or other victims of the crisis in their district can apply for $25,000 grants from the Disaster Response Fund.
Now through 30 June, 2022, designated Rotary Districts that border Ukraine and the Rotary district in Ukraine may apply for grants of up to $50,000 each from the Disaster Response Fund. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to provide relief to refugees or other victims of the crisis including items such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing.
