Our speaker this week will be Shirley Luckhart, a professor at U of I in the Entomology, Plant Pathology & Nematology Department. She is an expert on the transmission of Malaria by the female Anopheles Mosquito. For thirty years her team at U of I has been researching the "biology of the blood feeding interface – that is, how factors in mammalian host blood (drugs, cytokines, parasite factors) influence parasite development and transmission to the mosquito host."
Our Zoom call with Emmanuel Osei, our Shark Pond recipient in Ghana, went beautifully! The tech gods were with us! Emmanuel said that 2025 was "not easy, but interesting!". He told us about his various efforts to test possible uses of the plastic he's been collecting. One promising product is "paver bricks". One example is made from melted plastic, sand, and coconut husks. He also showed us a prototype of a backpack made from "fiber" made from shredded plastic. He's a fascinating young man!
