As you know, for several years we have been providing financial support for the Everyday Leaderhsip Program at Garfield Elementary. This week we'll get an update. Mary makes the following report:
Amy and I met with the Garfield teachers- Katie Tunca and Samantha Eichner Oct. 9. We explained what Rotary was, what we do, projects we've done, and had the kids give ideas on projects they could do. We explained why we're funding the group-we want kids to be future leaders who care and do good in the community. We gave them some yellow Rotary "Through the Generations" shirt (blue logo on front). We'll meet with the kids again at the end of the program in spring to hear what they learned and did.
The new facility for Interfaith Sanctuary is nearing completion. We have a tour scheduled for November 25. Between now and then, we want to collect winter stuff for the residents, including gloves, hats, scarves, etc. We'll deliver to them at our visit.
As you will recall, our first experience with Shark Pond was to interview two young men from Africa who had good ideas. We selected Emmanuel who has been keeping us informed thought the magic of WhatsApp. His project was to employ underserved women to collect plastic from the roads and sidewalks for recycling. Now he's grown his little business into collecting cardboard, and now he's building a small plant for his shredding machine. Then he can made blocks for building materials, among other things. WOW! We have been impressed! Very industrial young felllow! Our initial grant to him was $1,000 toward the purchase of a motorcycle truck to haul plastic. He will now start repaying that grant to a local Rotary club who will, in turn, make another grant to a local entrepreneur.
Now, we'll have the opportunity for Round #2 of the Shark Pond. The program was founded and is managed by Ben Davidson from the Pocatello Rotary Club. Officially, its called Entrapov. We need 4 Rotarians to volunteer for the selection committee. Contact Anne if you're interested.
