Not less than two hours a day should be devoted to exercise and the weather should be little regarded. If the body be feeble, the mind will not be strong.
Our program this week will be Sean Briggs, the Business Development Director of the Boise Airport. He's the guy that's bringing us non-stops to the east coast! Hooray!
Update! Our club has virtually travelled over 14,000 miles to attend Rotary meetings in 6 other districts! If you’ve visited another club recently, please be sure to tell Cornelia so we can get credit for it. And remember that you can also bring guests to our club for points. Have you invited anyone to Rotary recently?
Ramadan is the holy month of the Islamic calendar. It’s a month-long period of fasting, followed by a feast day celebration that’s also a day of giving gifts and doing acts of kindness. For you Christians, you might think of like Lent, followed by Christmas Day! 😊 To acknowledge our local refugee community, many of whom are Muslim, our club will once again support the Ramadan Grocery Project this year. You can help in two ways:
Donate food (or money for food) to Cornelia who heads up the annual service project. Details are here. You can find her on Venmo and PayPal.
Deliver a completed gift bag as part of our club’s Second Tuesday day of service. Sign up at that same link. You’ll be picking up a bag at 3600 N Trail Circle between noon and 1:00 on May 11 and making contactless doorstep that afternoon or evening. We will have at least 30-50 bags to distribute so your help is appreciated!
For more information on either of these opportunities, or about the Ramadan Grocery Project in general, reach out to Cornelia at csprung@redbuilt.com.
If you recall Laurie Zuckerman’s presentation 2 weeks ago, you’ll know that the Boise and Boise Southwest clubs partnered to produce a video about their initiative to collect freon canisters. The impact of safely disposing this refrigerant is enormous: each little canister has the carbon footprint equivalent of 3.2 tons of carbon—like driving from Los Angeles to New York three times! The video was entered in the international competition through Rotary’s ESRAG group, and has moved into the Top Three. If we retain that spot, the project gets a cash prize! Please go to this site, log in, and vote. You can vote every day, so let’s make sure District 5400 remains in an award position for this contest.
Global Grant Scholarship Application for Cheyenne Quilter is moving ahead. We have a Host Club identified in the UK. The name of the club is Edmonton and they are experienced with Rotary Scholarship applications.
More updates when I have them, but for now, Boise Metro's part is going smoothly. She is applying to King's College in London.
For last Tuesday's Service Project, our intrepid work crew headed off to Create Common Good who was moving into their new kitchen in the new Ameriben building in Meridian. The building owners have made a slick deal with CCG - you run our new employee cafeteria and we'll give you the space to run your program! We'll be hearing more details from Cynthia, the Director, when she presents at a meeting sometime soon. We built a warming table and unpacked many boxes of dishes and glassware to be hustled off to the dishwasher.
We are so excited for the spring weather, singing birds, spring blooms, and most of all to be able to finally reengage with wonderful volunteers like you. Please find the April 2021 edition of the Adopt the Greenbelt newsletter attached.
We would like to invite you to participate in the City Nature Challenge (CNC). The CNC is an international effort to document biodiversity using the free iNaturalist app. The event takes place between April 30th and May 3rd, during which time participants take and upload photos of wild organisms to iNaturalist. This is a great way to document and learn about the wild plants and animals that utilize your adopted Greenbelt section.
MAY 3RD IS OUR MONTHLY GREENBELT CLEANUP - PERFECT TIME TO PARTICIPATE!
Finally, as the snow disappears from the foothills, water levels in the river can rise rapidly. Please be aware of the potential for high water and flooding as you work along the Greenbelt. Construction will also impact a few Greenbelt sections this spring and summer.
Thank you for all you do to keep the Greenbelt safe, clean, and healthy for all. Please reach out if you have any questions.
Shiloh has sent you a book of tickets. The stubs have to be back to her by May 10th. This is an annual tradition of our District 5400; its the major fundraiser for the District; some of the money comes back to the clubs. It is the expectation that every Rotarian will sell ten tickets, either to friends and family members or to themselves!
It is district raffle time! Your chance to win!
We are having our annual triple grand prize raffle. Your club's President Elect (or another officer) has been mailed the tickets. Make sure your club is actively promoting the raffle. If your club isn't promoting the raffle, please email karlklokke@gmail.com.
If you are inactive Rotarian; hopefully you still have enough Rotary in your heart to support our raffle.
It is the only major fundraiser of the District. Every club and every Rotarian is obligated to participate. The purchase of least one $10 ticket (or a book 10), isn't too much to ask from every Rotarian.
