Our program this week will be Jenna McCollock, Volunteer Outreach Coordinator for the Wyakin Warriors and the Wyakin Foundation.
"We serve the men and women who have served us through expert professional and leadership development, strategic networking support, academic and career planning, and project management experiences designed to fully prepare wounded and injured veterans for fulfilling post-military careers through development of critical skill sets as well as renewed sense of purpose and self-identity."
Last week Cornelia provided more information about the Young Africa Leadership Initiative happening in June. The Department of English at BSU won a managing grant from the Mandela Washington Fellowship. There will be 26 young professionals from all over Africa visiting Boise for six weeks starting in June. June 25th has been scheduled for "Home Dinners". We can volunteer to assist in a variety of ways: drivers, mentors, one-on-ones, etc. They'll be living on Campus but we don't want them to tire of student union fare!
Participants will be notified Monday, that's tomorrow! If you haven't heard from me by Monday evening, please let me know! Prepare to be surprised! We have 21 people signed up for the dinner on May 4th. BUT, you won't be notified of your assignment until Monday April 29th. Please don't ask me ahead of time....we won't tell!
BIG NEWS! After almost five years of fits and starts, our Greenbelt Project is a "GO"! Clearwater Landscaping has submitted the winning bid to Parks and Rec; we have an estimate to move the D.A.R. monument and an estimate for our three interpretive signs. All together, the total cost is $73,000 (that's about 50% higher than where we started!). Our three Rotary clubs have committed to start a new fundraising program to get it done! We'll sell some more bricks (if you haven't purchased your Rotary brick yet, now is the time!); you can buy "naming rights" to our three interpretive signs for $5,000 each; we'll apply for some grants and, most fun, we'll start a GoFundMe campaign. We already have enough to get the contractor started; we can hold off on the monument and the signs if necessary. We'll also have a table at the District celebration- you might consider taking a turn there!
Martin will be here next month to report on his year with us. Our incoming student is a young lady from Osaka, Japan (who reportedly is fluent in English). She will arrive in late August. The first host family has been identified. Shiloh has volunteered to be the counselor.

"There are over 800 million retired cell phones discarded in drawers, desks, and storages in the United States with over 140 million more entering the waste stream each year. Phones 4 Charity is a national program designed to remove used cell phones from the country's environment while directly benefiting charitable organizations."
