Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and for all who come after you, as the one sight which every American should see.
Our program this week will be Cheyenne Quilter, a senior Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Cadet Quilter is a psychology major with an environmental engineer track that has a passion for gender equality, international policy reform focusing on women’s and children’s rights and policy reform for rights of victims of sexual violence. Her passions led her to work in Nepal, teaching children how to utilize their confidence to speak up against gender inequality through positive psychology skills from a curriculum she created with the Center for Enhanced Performance, at West Point. She's got a fascinating story to tell!
I got this message today from Olivia Galaviz, the teacher at Garfield running the Everyday Leadership program.
Garfield Everyday Leadership kiddos will be doing a river cleanup this Monday at 9am, if you'd like to join us. No pressure from me to join, but I know it's hard not being able to come in with the kids this year. We're meeting at Garfield at 9am on Monday. We'll walk down to the river for a clean-up stretch of the greenbelt and be done by 11am.
I realize that this is short notice for club members, but I wanted to make this visible to you. Charlene and I plan to go help out. If we could get a few more, that would be great. I believe this would be very similar to our own Greenbelt Clean up activity except that they may go closer to the river than we do. Plan to bring gloves and garbage bags. We will meet at the Garfield Elementary School (intersection of Broadway & Boise Avenue) at 8:50am. Let me know if you can make it.
We learned about this project last year. Maybe something we could get involved with? Click here for brochure. On January 28 at 6:00, the IBO (Intermountain Bird Observatory) will host a virtual event to update donors, volunteers, corporate and agency partners on the Diane Moore Nature Center: IBO on the River. The focus will be on the construction of the river side channel and its anticipated impact, which is a gift from Micron Technologies, Inc., but we will also share information and field questions about the entire project.
Its time for our club to update its Constitution and By-Laws. Dave Gott, Jeff Larsen and I have been working on this for several months. Our current governance document was originally adopted way back in 2003, with some minor modifications in 2014. In the meantime, Rotary International has revised the Standard Club Constitution (which are required to adopt) and a template for our by-laws. The by-laws is a document that sets forth the way the club operates. We can modify the template to fit the unique way Metro operates. It outlines such things as quorum requirements, membership procedures, committee structure, officer and director responsibilities, annual elections, financial accountability, and more. Some items are highlighted just to attract your attention.
The proposed document can be found by clicking here. Please review it carefully and let us know if you have any questions. We'll discuss it briefly at an upcoming meeting and then vote on it. The Board of Directors has approved it, but the membership must also approve it.
As you know, in lieu of having lunch every week, we've been providing financial support to a variety of local charities. If you have a favorite that deserves our support, please feel free to suggest it to club leadership.
Last week was supposed to be our service project week, but we got rained out. Instead, some of us gathered on the Zoom screen and introduced a new idea for our club to consider supporting.
