You know that we joined some other Rotary Clubs for a large District Grant to support the Everyday Leadership program at Garfield Elementary school. This week Bob Rainville and Sonia Galaviz will bring us up to date on the program and how our support is helping these kids. Bob is a member of Sunrise Rotary and has been spearheading this program for many years.
Our small, self-appointed group, met last week at Jeff Larsen's and brainstormed ideas on how to make Boise Metro Rotary Club's commitment to Garfield Everyday Leadership students and this program stronger and more meaningful for all those involved.
We are working on guidelines for our Rotary volunteers. What we'd like to do first is jump into the action by participating in Garfield Elementary's Everyday Leadership's current "Canned Food Drive". We'd like every member to bring at least one can of food to this coming Tuesday's meeting. I will be responsible for collecting those contributions and then delivering them to Garfield Elementary.
We have so many ideas about how our club can become more involved in helping mentor these fantastic youth leaders. We will share these as they are developed.
President Alli was pleased to present Matt H. with his first Paul Harris pin last week. (For the uninitiated, a Paul Harris recognition is given to a member every time they contribute $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation). In honor of his award, Matt stepped up and offered yet another $1,000 if members of the club would match him. Within seconds, Brett, Alli and Scott accepted the challenge! So, just like that, we added $2,000 to our club's Foundation participation.
Last spring we held our first ever Fishing Derby at the pond at Eagle Island State Park. A fine time was had by all with lots of fish caught and some amazing prizes! We would like to make this an annual event for our club, scaling it up to become a major fund raiser. Last year's Committee chair was Dave Wilson but he needs to back off this year so he can get married (!) So the Fishing Derby Committee needs a new chair and crew. All the work has been done, i.e. we don't have to reinvent the wheel, but there is stuff that has to be done pretty soon. If you're interesting in knowing more, contact Dave.
Last call to sign up for dinner! Our second GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER event will be Saturday, January 11th. Here's how it works: You can sign up to be either a "host" or a "guest". If you are a guest, you will be told where to go for a fine Rotary dinner at an undisclosed member's home. Guests come empty handed; you are not allowed to bring anything ( you could bring your favorite adult beverage to share, but not required). If you are a "host", able to sit 6 to 8 people, you will prepare the entire meal. You will not know who your guests will be. This is for singles or couples, assignments will be random and secret. Sign up sheets will be available in early December. (You can also download the sign up sheet from our website, under "club documents") iSign ups must be received by December 15th.This is a fun way to get to know your fellow Rotarians! WE NEED HOSTS!
Once again this year we will be providing Christmas gifts for the JEM friends kids to put under their tree. Attached you will find the Wish List where you can register what you would like to provide. Bring your gift to our Holiday Fellowship event on December 15th for wrapping. Thanks for supporting this effort, the kids really appreciate it!
Join us Sunday afternoon from 4-6 PM December 15th for some holiday cheer and fellowship. We'll meet at Potter Wines at 5286 W. Chinden. We'll also take this opportunity to wrap the gifts we've purchased for the JEMFriends kids. We'll have wrapping supplies and snacks.
