“There can be nothing in the world more beautiful than the Yosemite, the groves of the giant sequoias and redwoods, the Canyon of the Colorado, the Canyon of the Yellowstone, the Three Tetons; and our people should see to it that they are preserved for their children and their children’s children forever, with their majestic beauty all unmarred.”

Last week more than a thousand Rotarians from around the world participated in a virtual call with former R.I. President Ian Riseley to promote Rotary's seventh, and newest, Area of Focus - Environmental Sustainability. The presentation was organized ESRAG (Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group). Riseley said, "attention to the environment is a cause whose time has come". Rotary should promote rectification of damage already done and prevention of future damage through advocacy and education. Environment projects will now be eligible for Rotary Global Grants and the Rotary Foundation has set up a new sub-account for environmental support. Watch for news of a video contest called "I Fix The Planet".
On Saturday there was a joint effort to both cleanup our section of Greenbelt and scope out areas for our Pollinator Garden. Unfortunately, we also discovered that some yo-yo had removed the door from our Little Library. We'll have to make a replacement.
The Rotary Wetlands Peace Park committee met this week, getting closer to a final plan. The new path will be about 4000 feet and will feature interpretive signs, Rotary "Peace Poles", benches, bird houses, etc. The total cost looks like somewhere around $100k. Go check it out, across the Greenbelt from the Willow Lane Softball complex.
But first, there will be opportunities this spring to water and mulch plantings that were done last year, along with invasive plant removal. Watch for opportunities to sign up.
The annual District 5400 Grant Program will be opening for projects soon. There are five tiers of grants ranging from small ($500) which do not require a club match, up to $5,000 which do require the match. Projects must fit within the Rotary Avenues of Service. Applications are due by June 1st. For more details, click here: (This is last year's, but the 2021-22 program will be the same). Think about projects that our club undertakes that might be eligible for some financial assistance. In the previous two years, we have joined with Boise Sunrise to support Everyday Leadership.
Our Board has voted to continue supporting Everyday Leadership and Garfield Elementary School through a District Grant for $10,000. The District will match our contribution of $5,000.
Your Fellowship Committee is planning on a family Greenbelt bike ride this spring. We'll map out a 15 miler, stopping at points of interest along the way, with details you never knew! And, yes, there will be wine involved! Look for a survey where you can indicate a favored date.
