ROTARY AT THE ZOO MAY 4TH
Don’t miss out on one of the great times of 2022 - Rotary Night at Zoo Boise.  On May 4th the Zoo’s gates will close to the public at 5:00 PM and reopen to Rotarians and their guests at 5:30.  This is a terrific Zoo Boise - Rotary partnership to benefit Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique.  Zoo Boise provides the Zoo free to Rotary which charges a nominal admission, 100% of which goes to the second Global Grant providing health care to the Gorongosa Park buffer Zone communities.
LOAFING SHED - ALMOST
The crew got a good start on the loafing sheds for Idaho Youth Ranch last Saturday. With some equipment problems and frozen ground, they'll have to plan a return trip to finish the project.
RYLA CHANGES LIVES
Rotary Youth Leadership AwardsRotary Youth Leadership Award program is designed for high school Juniors. This District-wide event is held each year in Twin Falls. Our club has budgeted funds to support three kids. Read the details here:

DO YOU HAVE A ROTARY SAFETY VEST?

Does anyone in the club have ‘Rotary at Work’ safety vests in its inventory of supplies? And if so, would you be willing to let the Sgt at Arms borrow them at District Conference/Celebration this year? See Shiloh for more information.

YOUTH EXCHANGE UPDATE
Rotary International's Youth Exchange program is back, after a Covid hiatus. While our club is not hosting a kid this year, we will be the official "liaison" between the District YE Committee and the host family. The McSorley family will be hosting Catherine from Taiwan, for her first session. She'll arrive in August to start her senior year at Boise High. Our club has committed to a monthly stipend of $150 to support her expenses. Shiloh and Cornelia will be acting as mentors. We can look forward to her visiting our club.
DISTRICT RAFFLE TICKETS
Every year the District sells Raffle Tickets, the winner to be drawn at District Conference. This is the District's major fund raiser for the year. Each club will get a share, too! And look at those prizes!! Every member is given a book of ten tickets and is expected to sell them all! They have to be turned in no later than May 15th ish. You can send funds to the club via Venmo or write a check payable to Boise Metro, and get it to Scott Swan.

RAMADAN RUBARAK
Shukran! That means ‘Thanks’ in Arabic. Boise Metro Rotarians have donated $446.10 towards this project. That has allowed Cornelia to complete almost all of the necessary purchases, after receiving gifts-in-kind from Amalgamated Sugar and PNW Farmers Cooperative, plus a $500 grant from the Albertsons Companies Foundation. The purchasing side has been handled, so now it’s on to deliveries!

There are 2 ways you can help deliver grocery bags to newly arrived Afghani families:
  • Pick up some pre-addressed, filled bags at Rotary next week. About 20 bags will be available.
  • Pick up some pre-addressed, filled bags at Cornelia’s home on April 23. The pickup window is 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and the address is 3600 Trail Circle. Please let Cornelia know (email csprung@redbuilt.com or text 754-777-8642) if she should expect you on Saturday.
In either case, deliver the bags to the addresses provided no later than April 30 which marks the end of Ramadan in Eid al-Fitr, a 3-day celebration of feasting and gift giving. You may want to say “Ramadan Mubarak” or “Eid Mubarak” to recipients as you give them their gift, to wish them a blessed Ramadan/blessed Eid. And you may even hear them respond with “Shukran”.
PACK THE PANTRY EVENT APRIL 21ST

Thursday, April 21st from 4-6:30pm, the United Way of Treasure Valley's Women United group will be collecting items for our Homeless Student Basic Needs Pantry. This pantry serves roughly 60 schools throughout the valley. It's our hope to supply school workers with basic needs items for students who may be experiencing food insecurity and barriers to hygiene during this difficult time in our nation's history.

How to participate! Please plan to put your items in the trunk of your car and enter our parking lot on the east side of the building. You'll be greeted and given instructions to pull around back where we will unload your vehicle. You will exit the parking lot on the west side of our building.

Items needed
  • Easy to eat items such as: nuts, seeds (pumpkin, sunflower), dried fruit, protein bars/snack bars/granola bars, tuna pouches (especially if they come with a utensil), crackers, peanut butter, cookies, beef jerky, popcorn (popped in an individual serving size bag), veggie straws, chips.
  • Hygiene items: shampoo, conditioner, soap, razors, combs, brushes, deodorant, individually packaged toothbrushes, toothpaste, tampons, maxi pads, and lice kits.
  • Items in highest demand: shampoo, bodywash (male & female), deodorant (male & female), hairbrushes, underwear.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE MAY 20
Plans are nearly complete for this year's District Conference in beautiful Sun Valley, May 20-21. District leadership promises a great event, including the Saturday evening banquet (featuring Brian Shul, a fighter pilot with a fascinating story)  and a variety of service projects on Saturday afternoon. The best advice is to stay at the Sun Valley Hotel so you don't miss any of the action! We have a block of rooms reserved  - $179/ night. For more details check the District 5400 website. Early registration ends March 31. Every Rotarian should attend a District Conference. Our club will reimburse attendees $100, toward your bar bill. Cornelia will be creating a "giving tree" of gift cards for the silent auction.
AID FOR UKRAINE
All Rotarians are Encouraged to Support the - Disaster Relief Fund - for Ukraine - In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has created an official channel for Rotary members around the world to contribute funds to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary Districts and has designated its Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions.

Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund in support of Ukraine can be made online at Disaster Response Fund | My Rotary. All funds need to be received into the Disaster Response Fund by 30 April, 2022 in order to qualify for use in support of the Ukrainian relief efforts.

  • Now through 30 April, 2022, Rotary districts can transfer unallocated District Designated Funds (DDF) to support the Disaster Response Fund, directly supporting these Ukraine-specific humanitarian grants.
  • During this same period, other impacted Rotary districts that wish to offer support to refugees or other victims of the crisis in their district can apply for $25,000 grants from the Disaster Response Fund.
  • Now through 30 June, 2022, designated Rotary Districts that border Ukraine and the Rotary district in Ukraine may apply for grants of up to $50,000 each from the Disaster Response Fund. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to provide relief to refugees or other victims of the crisis including items such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing.

IF YOU MISSED IT.........
As our series on the history of our songs continues, this week we told the history of Take Me Out To the Ballgame. The reason we all know it so well is that in 1976 Harry Caray introduced it as the 7th inning stretch song for the Cubs They're still doin' it! Here he is:
