Not less than two hours a day should be devoted to exercise and the weather should be little regarded. If the body be feeble, the mind will not be strong.
Our speaker this week will be John Lodal, from Sunrise Rotary. John serves on the Board of Semilla Nueva, the sustainable agriculture program in Guatemala that we have supported over the years. He'll bring us up to date on the progress and challenges brought on by the global pandemic. John is also spearheading the Rotary Wetlands Peace Park.
Based on the guidance provided by both Rotary International and the District Leadership Council, the 2021 District Conference that was to be held at the Sun Valley Resort on May 21 – 22, 2021 will instead be held virtually on Friday, May 21, 2021.
This year's Virtual District Conference will include a fun-filled pre-show from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. MST that you will not want to miss, with the actual District Conference being held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. MST.
We welcome Echo Sarlya to our club this month! Echo was born in Wales, UK, but spent most of her childhood in San Mateo, CA. She went to Notre Dame HS in Belmont, CA. She graduated from Chico Sate with a degree in Journalism/Public Relations and a minor in Marketing and Tourism. She has worked for Micron for almost 20 years. In her current position she is responsible for North America and EMEA Indirect Procurement and Global Procurement Business Enablement. (Wut?) Echo has two stepchildren but, alas, no pets. Her hobbies include anything outdoors, biking, hiking, skiing, swimming and reading a good book! Welcome Echo!
You should recall that back in January we heard a presentation from Cheyenne Quilter, a Cadet at the the U. S. Military Academy. She spoke about her work on Women's and Children's rights in Nepal. We are going to sponsor her application for a $30,000 college scholarship through the Rotary Foundation. Our District 5400 provides half the funds, matching the Foundation. A foreign experience is required, so she hopes to attend Kings College in London for the one year program. We may be able to connect with the Rotary Club there!
Rotary District 5400 has developed a contest to renew enthusiasm for visiting other clubs and to boost Rotary membership. Yes, I said contest—there are prizes! Participating is easy. Here’s all you need to do:
Go visit a different club. If it’s in our district they’ll be participating in the contest, too, but we get more points for extra-district visits. Two helpful resources are pasted below: a list of clubs in D5400 that have virtual meetings, plus some tips. Or if you’re travelling, use the Rotary app or website to locate clubs where you are.
Invite a guest to our club meetings. Consider who the speaker will be and think of someone you know who would be interested in that topic. Then simply invite them and share our meeting details. They’ll probably be flattered you thought of them. It’s so easy, and these days there isn’t even a lunch to pay for! Colleagues, clients, family members... they're all fair game.
Let me know. You can request an official “passport” from Lisa Vetter if you want to use a booklet to keep track of your own visits, but I’ll also do it for our club centrally, if you just let me know about your visits and your guests.
Our Board has voted to continue supporting Everyday Leadership and Garfield Elementary School through a District Grant for $10,000. The District will match our contribution of $5,000.
In December of 2020, Greater Boise Rotary Foundation granted the YMCA $20,000 for the School Day Plus program. School Day Plus offers flexible, in-person child care for school-age children as well as online learning support at eight locations across the Treasure Valley. The program aligns with adjusted school district calendars and online learning and provides academic support.
From August-December 2020 the School Day Plus program served 693 students and is currently serving approximately 418 youth. For parents who have to work outside the home, this program makes both working and quality learning possible. The full-time teachers accommodate the varied student schedules and guide them through their online day.
Our team of 7 Rotarians joined other volunteers at the Idaho Food Bank on Tuesday for a two hour shift repackaging white beans. By the time we finished, we had packaged 3800 pounds of beans into 2 pound packages. Good Job! (See if you can identify the Rotarians pictured!)
Last week more than a thousand Rotarians from around the world participated in a virtual call with former R.I. President Ian Riseley to promote Rotary's seventh, and newest, Area of Focus - Environmental Sustainability. The presentation was organized ESRAG (Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group). Riseley said, "attention to the environment is a cause whose time has come". Rotary should promote rectification of damage already done and prevention of future damage through advocacy and education. Environment projects will now be eligible for Rotary Global Grants and the Rotary Foundation has set up a new sub-account for environmental support. Watch for news of a video contest called "I Fix The Planet".
Your Fellowship Committee is planning on a family Greenbelt bike ride this spring. We'll map out a 15 miler, stopping at points of interest along the way, with details you never knew! And, yes, there will be wine involved! Look for a survey where you can indicate a favored date.
